Gummersbach is the district town of the Oberbergisches Kreis and was formerly also known as the Lindenstadt, as linden trees lined the main street. Until the 1920s, the citizens also called their city Little Paris. Today Gummersbach is the most important medium-sized center in the Oberbergischer Kreis and is known for its handball Bundesliga club, VfL Gummersbach.
