The "first SMS" in history were written from the hill between Ober-Hilbersheim and Sprendlingen. The Napoleon storm with its signal arms is modeled on a historical telegraph pole with which the first short messages were sent over a distance of 12 kilometers in Napoleon's time.
You can climb up inside the tower and find several directional signs here: Donnersberg, Metzt, Bad Kreuznach and Mainz

In 1813, an optical telegraph line was in regular operation over a longer distance for the first time in Germany. It is the line between Mainz and Metz, which was part of the telegraph network of the French Empire. The fact that such a telegraph line was in operation at the time is largely unknown to the population.
To commemorate this important stage in the history of communications, signal towers have been reconstructed at several locations along the telegraph line. At the Windhäuser Hof between Schwabenheim and Essenheim there is also an interesting reconstruction with many information boards.
