A moat completely surrounds the castle. "The origin of the castle goes back to a Bartensleben castle from the 12th century". Amalie and Heinrich Adrian von Veltheim had a baroque palace built from the parts of the old castle in the 18th century. Until 1945 owned by the von Veltheim family.
In the meantime it has been privately owned again since 1998, and is being renovated. Because the inside of the staircase was torn out, external emergency stairs had been added.

Bartensleben Castle is a baroque castle built in the middle of the 18th century on the foundation walls of a moated castle built in the 12th century. It is located on an island surrounded by a moat. Behind the castle is a former English landscape park that was created from an earlier baroque garden.
After World War II it was used by the Soviet occupying power and later by the National People's Army. Later it was a women's sanatorium and then until 1991 an old people's home.
