It was named after the monk Juan Jesús, who climbed the rock to pray in the 18th century (other sources say 17th century). A small temple/chapel sits atop the rock, a unique feature. The rock can be accessed via a staircase.
It is located within the city limits of Puerto de la Cruz, northeast of Castillo San Felipe. A new bronze dome was added and the rock was restored in 2003.
