The palace belonged to the princes of Éboli, the 1st Dukes of Pastrana. However, it was not they who had it built; Dona Ana de la Cerda, Countess of Mélito and grandmother of the Princess of Éboli, commissioned the construction of the palace in 1542 to the great architect of the time, Alonso de Covarrubias. He designed a palace with a square plan and four corner towers, a central courtyard, side and rear gardens, and in front of the palace a large parade ground.
