Since the first timetable change on December 14, 2014, numerous long-distance trains have been stopping at Vienna Central Station. In December 2015, the entire rail infrastructure was completed, and the station can now fully fulfill its role as an international transport hub.
In 2003, the federal government, the City of Vienna, and Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) signed a declaration of intent to jointly realize the Vienna through station project. In 2004, an international expert competition was launched for the master plan of the planned new district, the Vienna South Station district.
