Unfortunately Chris didn't take a picture. I found the creek really special.

These iron ocher-bearing springs, which make their way through the undergrowth in a rust-red colour, are an eye-opening experience.

Some of the springs emerging here on the mountainside produce yellow iron ochre (rust), which is dissolved by the water from ironstone layers lying between the coal seams. Fish and insect larvae cannot survive in this water because the ochre mud clogs their respiratory organs.
The water temperature of approximately 9°C indicates a near-surface origin. The iron ochre originates from an ironstone seam or is brought in through mountain crevices. The mine water from the former Glückaufsegen mine, which flows on the opposite side of the Schondellebach valley in the Primeltal valley and also contains iron ochre, is 13-15°C year-round and thus originates from deeper, warmer layers of the earth.
A connection between the springs and the tunnel built by Christine & Schöndelle (1750-1832), located about 500 m further south in what is now the Tierpark, can be ruled out, as can a 10 m deep air shaft to the Sonnenschein seam, which was still present in 1925, a little further north. Due to the disturbed rock formation, no mining took place in the vicinity of the springs.
