Unfortunately, the terrain is often overcrowded, as many bus tourists swarm in the morning. It is better to explore the very extensive archaeological site in the late afternoon. On the one hand, it is now much "quieter" and on the other hand, the sunlight is now much softer and brings impressive details to shine.

The second episode of the seven-part television series "Ancient Wonders of the World" focuses on the legendary statue of Zeus, the father of the gods, in Olympia, which was both a fascinating sanctuary and a legendary sporting venue. Olympia was the sanctuary of Zeus in Elis. It was the host site of the ancient Olympic Games.
The land at the confluence of the Cladeus and Alpheus rivers has a long history of settlement. The oldest ceramic finds in the area of the stadium date back to the fourth millennium BC, i.e., to the end of the Neolithic period or the beginning of the Chalcolithic period.
Settlement history ends with the establishment of the sanctuary at this site, as no human habitation was permitted in the area dedicated to Zeus.
While the sanctuary was built around the middle of the 11th century BC, the first evidence of regular competitions dates from shortly before the beginning of the 7th century BC.
The stadium is surrounded by simple grass banks that could accommodate around 45,000 spectators.
