Bernau am Chiemsee

The coat of arms of our community comes from the former mayor Dr. Hugo Decker from 1956. It shows a green house brand that hovers over a blue three-hill covered with two continuous corrugated beams. Bernau am Chiemsee (officially: Bernau a.Chiemsee) is a municipality in the district of Rosenheim in Upper Bavaria. The main town of the same name is the seat of the municipal administration and a climatic health resort.
The main town is in Chiemgau on the south-west shore of Lake Chiemsee. The place is affected by the federal autobahn 8 (A 8) Munich - Salzburg and the railway line Rosenheim - Salzburg. The Chiemgau Alps stretch south of Bernau with the prominent peak of the Kampenwand. To the east of the town lies a vast moorland area, where peat used to be mined on a large scale. An old peat station in the Kendlmühlfilzen still bears witness to this today. It is 24 km to Rosenheim, 83 km to Munich, 35 km to Kufstein, 26 km to Traunstein, 58 km to Salzburg and 25 km to Reit im Winkl.
On the banks of the Chiemsee, Bernau has a lido, boat rentals and a pier for the Chiemsee shipping company. The Herreninsel can be reached directly from here.
