Hinkelstein pumping stationThe route descends under the dome of the listed Hinkelstein waterworks to a depth of around 15 meters. An underground tunnel leads along the fountain gallery under the railway tracks almost to Schwanheimer Bahnstrasse. Above ground, the facility is accompanied by the “tunnel path” (no passage along the railway tracks). When it went into operation in 1894, 210 wells pumped groundwater in a suction system. But this technology soon became outdated and from 1924 the old wells were replaced by 74 new wells. In 1964 these systems also had to be renewed. Today the groundwater is obtained from ten deep wells, each 66-143 meters deep. (Source: City of Frankfurt)
