This church, built in 1454, was part of a hospital and became also known as Igreja de São José (Church of St. Joseph) in 1721, after a miracle attributed to an effigy of the saint. In the early 18th century, King João V declared it a royal church, which explains the royal coat of arms on the portal. It was rebuilt in 1752 in baroque, rococo and neoclassical styles, not much of the original Gothic remains.
