Gravel was mined here until the 1950s and was taken on a small train to the harbor on Kleine Krampe to be loaded there. The gravel was needed for mortar production for the houses of Berlin. Later, part of the sand chute was filled up with building rubble. In the northern part of Lenin should be buried, the parts of the great Lenin monument at the former Leninplatz. The remaining lower part of the gravel pit was used from the sixties as a shooting range, which still exists today.
