The fire-bellied toadA rarity is the approx. 4 cm small fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) in Schleswig-Holstein. According to the Red List, it is threatened with extinction. There are residual deposits especially in the East Holstein hill country. In the Schleswig-Flensburg district there are a few isolated occurrences in the hill country. The red-orange spots on the belly give it its name. During the mating season you can hear the long calls of the red-bellied toad males in their spawning waters. The preferred bodies of water are mainly sunlit, perennial small bodies of water with dense aquatic vegetation, but also floodplains in floodplains and floodplains. The main reasons for their greatly reduced residual occurrence are mainly the overbuilding and the drying out of small bodies of water, among other things due to the drop in the groundwater level. The red-bellied toad also dwindles when the small bodies of water are stocked with fish. In addition, the well-developed road network along migration routes endangers the survival of the animals.
