"In a pedestrian zone in front of the old town hall of Osterode stands this striking bronze sculpture. It is reminiscent of a time-honored trade in the city and represents a loaded with a grain bag and his donkeys dar. Once supplied these donkey drivers, the inhabitants of the Upper Harz mountain towns with bread grain, which stored in Osterode in Harzkornmagazin. The donkey drivers were self-employed grain merchants and organized themselves into their own guild. "

Due to poor infrastructure in the Harz, mostly unpaved roads, the transport of food, e.g. from the Kornmagazin in Osterode, to the remote areas difficult. This task was done by donkey drivers, who were placed in front of the Old Town Hall of the city a monument.

The donkey's ears are already shining golden! Probably many people hope for luck and have touched their ears for it.

Medieval history is remembered. At that time there were only a few roads in the Harz Mountains that were rarely paved, and if so, only roughly so that many places could only be reached via dirt roads. Therefore, a kind of guild of the so-called donkey drivers was formed, which took over the transport of food with donkey caravans from the grain store in Osterode to the Upper Harz.
