It was first mentioned in the 9th century, along with Corvey Abbey. From 1528 to 1531, the previous building was demolished, and the choir was rebuilt using materials from the old church. High-quality sandstone blocks were used for the single-nave nave.

In 1881–1882, further reconstruction took place, during which the old church tower and sacristy were demolished. A new tower, side chapels, and two sacristies were built. Today, only the right side altar remains of the original furnishings.

As the church had become too small, the hall church was expanded in 1957 by adding two side aisles to create the current hall church. In 1987, the interior was completely redesigned with an impressive star vault that begins on consoles. Noteworthy are the frescoes in the choir, uncovered in 1531, depicting the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, the Crowning with Thorns, John the Baptist and Saint Vitus, the patron saint of the church.

The Roman Catholic listed church of St. Vitus is in Lathen. The church was mentioned in connection with Corvey as early as the 9th century, as the Vitus patronage commemorates. From 1528 to 1531, the previous building was demolished and a nave with 3 bays and the 3/8th-finished choir, which were not aligned, were rebuilt. In 1881–1882 the old church tower and the sacristy were demolished. A new tower, two side chapels and two sacristies were built. There are four church bells hanging in the tower, the two oldest are from 1652 and 1728, the two younger ones are from 1922 because their predecessors were melted down during the First World War. Because the church was too small, the hall church was expanded into today's hall church in 1957 by adding two side aisles.

The Roman Catholic listed church of St. Vitus can be seen from far outside.
