Bike Touring Highlight
The Hilter lock has two lock chambers, which lie next to each other. The old lock chamber was put into operation in 1899, the new lock chamber 1956. From 2013 to 2015, the lock was renovated and is now state-of-the-art.For those who are not so interested in the lock itself, I recommend the restaurant next door. There are delicious food and refreshing drinks.

Old lockThe first lock chamber was built in 1896 in an embankment design and put into operation with the completion of the Dortmund-Ems Canal in 1899. It is 165 m long, 10 m wide and is closed with two mortise gates.New lockParallel to the old lock, another and wider lock chamber was built in 1955/56. It is 165 m long and 12 m wide.In the period from 2013 to 2015, the system was repaired from the ground up for around 8 million euros and brought up to the latest state of the art. The lock received new sliding gates and it was set up for remote control and monitoring by the Meppen control center. Since not all work could be carried out during ongoing operations, the new lock had to be temporarily closed and shipping diverted via the old lock. As part of this work, the lock bridge was also completely replaced in 2013.
