Hiking
The landscape south of Siena is called "Crete Senesi" - in Italian "the clay minerals of Siena". Characteristic of the natural erosion of the area are the gently rolling, often rather dry hilltops and in contrast to the fertile river valleys. Due to low rainfall and the relatively poor clay soil, there are some places in the Crete Senesi that have desert character.
