The Heuven sheepfold (built in 1870) has the principle of a deep-lying barn: the low-lying floor is covered with heather sods and/or straw. During the day, the sheep graze on the heath and at night they stay in the fold. There they leave their manure. This mixture of sheep manure with heather sods and straw is applied as fertiliser to the fields of the poor sandy soils.
