The Ice Age influence on the area can still be seen today in the undulating terrain. The historically created heath landscape with small areas of special biotopes, such as open sand areas and sandy dry and nutrient-poor grassland, determine the image of the "Barger Heide". The diversity of species in the area can be seen e.g. in a rich insect fauna. Special plant species are the heather pink (Dianthus deltoides), the gorse (Genista pilosa) and the English broom (Genista anglica).
