Hiking
The rhododendrons bloom in April and May, and this gorge is fantastic. Tip: Concrete blocks are picturesquely scattered among the bushes. These are the remains of a bunker complex, like everywhere else in the green belt. Fortresses have been converted into rock gardens, a brilliant idea in peacetime.
May 2025: Ferns, perennials, and bushes were removed from the southern slope of the gorge. I don't understand why. The bare earth presents a dreary scene.

Hiking
The "gorge" is far less spectacular than one might assume from its name; it is the remains of a ditch that was once part of the city's fortifications. It is part of the forest botanical garden in the Cologne district of Rodenkirchen. The main attraction of this section can be admired when the rhododendrons are in bloom.
