A must for a visit to Stralsund is a tour of the monastery complex. If only the ruins of the actual monastery remain, it is the small houses within the monastery walls that are beautiful to look at.

The Johanniskloster in the German Hanseatic city of Stralsund was built as a Franciscan monastery in the year 1254, shortly after the city charter was granted in 1234, on the outskirts, at that time directly on the banks of the Strelasund.
The monastery complex is located in the core area of the historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2002. Areas of the Stralsund city archive are housed here. Architecturally, the Johanniskloster is a mixture of different stylistic epochs, elements of Gothic, Baroque and Classicism can be identified. The entrance is on Schillstrasse.
