This church in the Bornheim district of Waldorf was dedicated primarily to the Archangel Michael, with the Apostle Matthias as the second patron.

The name Michael (from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?" He is often depicted - in paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, occasionally also a lance. Michael is - along with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human belief) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is September 29th.

Saint Matthias, second patron of the Waldorf Church, is one of the twelve apostles from the closest circle of Jesus' disciples, but was not - like the rest - appointed to this office by himself. After the delivery of Jesus by Judas Iscariot and the subsequent crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the eleven remaining apostles prayed for the Holy Spirit and elected a new twelfth apostle. The lot fell on Matthias, as reported in the "Acts of the Apostles" of the New Testament (Acts 1, 15-26).

His feast day is on May 14th, in the German-speaking area on February 24th. He is buried in the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier, which is the only grave of the Apostles north of the Alps, and a number of St. Matthias Brotherhoods (SMB) - including Bornheim-Waldorf - regularly make pilgrimages there.
