The Schwalm rises in the urban area of Erkelenz in the district of Geneiken. A few kilometers below its source, it flows through a wetland south of the Wegberg district of Tüschenbroich at about 85 m above sea level. NHN. From there, its water flows mainly through the Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park, with its river bed running between Rur, Nette and Niers. It also flows through Wegberg, Niederkrüchten, Schwalmtal, Brüggen-Born, Brüggen and Swalmen or past them. From the total length of the river to its confluence with the Meuse, near the village of Swalmen, 13 kilometers run on Dutch territory.
Parts of the river course have a natural meander course.

A biotope that is left to its own devices. Here nature is fighting for survival.

The former headwaters of the Schwalm were between Erkelenz and Wegberg. As a result of brown coal mining south of the Schwalm catchment area and the associated dewatering measures, these have dried up. Today, the springs in the Genhof area are artificially discharged with dewatering water.
From there, its water flows mainly through the Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park, past the Tüschenbroich mill and castle near Tüschenbroich. Then through Wegberg, Lüttelforst, past Waldniel and Niederkrüchten, through the Hariksee, through Brüggen-Born, Brüggen and Swalmen. Of the total length of the Schwalm, 45.3 km, to its mouth in the Maas, near the town of Swalmen at around 12 m NAP, 13 km run on Dutch territory.
