    Tips

As early as the 13th century, the Schwalm was significantly altered by mill dams and moved from its natural valley location to a hillside location between the Brüggener and Borner mills. Around 1920 there was a further straightening and embankment. The ecosystem is damaged in the straightened sections. The straightening prevents the development of near-natural water body structures, which are a prerequisite for an attractive and species-rich habitat. The dyke separates the river from its floodplain and the natural flood plains.
In order to improve the ecological and water management situation in this section, the Schwalmaue Vennmühle was renatured. To ensure flood protection in the Brüggen area, new floodplains were created in the floodplain. The Schwalm was restored to a state as close to its natural state as possible and part of its potentially natural flood plains was restored.

With this measure, the direct connection to measures already carried out in the Dilborner Benden as well as the fish ladders of the Brüggener and Borner Mühle took place.

At walking pace, you cross a long river island. The Schwalm flows to our left and right, one of the ecologically most valuable lowland rivers on the left bank of the Lower Rhine. In 2003, flood plains were created in the Schwalmaue 'Vennmühle' for flood protection and the restoration of ecological areas.

The Vennmühle in Brüggen, a former watermill, now houses a family center / daycare center. Fantastically located.
