Peat bogs, heaths and sand ridges...
Countless special plants grow in this varied landscape of impenetrable peat bogs, ponds, open heathlands, plains, bushes and sand ridges. Moreover, it is one of the richest bird areas in Western Europe.

This nature reserve, with all its wealth, is a paradise for hikers.

The Deurnese Peel and the Mariapeel around the former peat colonies Griendtsveen and Helenaveen are also remnants of this once very extensive peat bog area. They are beautiful, largely accessible nature reserves with a combined area of more than 2,500 hectares.

Peat up to 8 meters high
To the west of the Deurnese peel lies the peel edge fault, this fault line ensures that the groundwater is pushed up in both peel areas. Because of these wet conditions, the raised bog has been able to pile up for centuries into a package of 6 to 8 meters high.

      Traces of peat extraction
The area must have been at least 30,000 hectares in size in the past, where large-scale peat extraction took place by cutting off the high moors. Clear traces remain, which can mainly be seen in the many canals, ditches and peel lanes that cross the two peat areas. Since 1980-1981, the Mariapeel has been designated as a protected nature reserve.
