The Cemitério dos Remédios is very impressive. It was built outside the city walls in the 19th century. The marble portal dates from the Renaissance and is the work of the French sculptor Nicolás Chanterene. It comes from the destroyed church of the disappeared monastery of São Domingos de Évora. In the oldest part of the cemetery, pantheons and tombs from the second half of the 19th century have been preserved. Here you can walk and ponder between all the stone graves. There are many family crypts and impressive "houses" in honor of the dead.

The Municipal Cemetery of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios was inaugurated in 1840, and valuable pieces from other destroyed convents were placed there, such as the magnificent Renaissance portal in pink marble, whose authorship is attributed to Nicolau Chanterene & dates from 1537/38 from the church of the Convent of S. Domingos, which was demolished at the time. The same happened with the sculptural pieces in the different blocks, to which they also give their name. There were several workshops and artists who have been involved in the execution of the mausoleums, tombs and sculptures since the inauguration of the cemetery, among which stand out: L. F. da Silva from Évora & Officinas Salles and Sons from Lisbon.
