Gerstungen Castle was originally a moated castle that secured a ford across the Werra. The Peace of Gerstungen was concluded here in 1074 - the settlement of an uprising that had actually begun in the Harz Mountains. Saxon peasants had rebelled against the nobility and after refusing to negotiate, Henry IV had to flee from Harzburg and finally face an army of insurgents near Hersfeld, but neither side fought. So they met at Gerstungen Castle for negotiations.
