It was a time troubled by natural disasters and disease epidemics.
A misguided judiciary, religious delusion and human action out of fear and resentment led to a witch craze not only in Wemding at this time.
A memorial plaque is attached directly to the torture tower: the city of Wemding commemorates those 38 women and 11 men who fell victim to the witch craze between 1609 and 1631.
