The electoral castle is a low castle. It is located in the old town directly on the Rhine. The square south of the castle is now called Burgplatz. In the immediate vicinity of the castle are the remains of the northeast tower of the former Roman fort Bodobrica. To the west, Burgstrasse and to the east, Ablaßgasse, pass the castle. The castle was located at the intersection of the city center, which has been walled since Roman times, and the fortifications of the upper town that had been made in the course of the 13th century.
