Eichstätt's old town and the sights in Eichstätt are thoroughly influenced by the Baroque style. Only a few houses and churches, including the cathedral, were preserved when Catholic Eichstätt was captured and destroyed by the Swedish army in the Thirty Years' War. During the reconstruction, which took place during a period of economic boom, the contemporary Baroque style was generally preferred, and so the small town in the Altmühl valley with the sights in Eichstätt offers a very beautiful, uniform cityscape.
