If you want to get very close to the Roman history of Leiden, you should definitely visit Archaeological Park Matilo. The park is named after the castellum that served as a defensive fortress here about 2000 years ago. The archaeological remains of this army camp, but also those of a medieval monastery are still hidden in the soil. Above ground, the municipality of Leiden has made the history of this area visible with reconstructions of watchtowers and children's playground equipment in Roman style.

If it is up to the municipality of Leiden, Archaeological Park Matilo will grow into an open stage where art, history and culture meet. In Park Matilo, various parties organize activities for young and old. There is even a Roman archery association (Sagittatus) active!
