Enjoy between trees, dunes and sea. This most beautiful and oldest nature reserve in Flanders can be found in the westernmost corner of Belgium, on the border with France. Come and enjoy the peace, romp in the foraging area and admire these beautiful dunes, which look different every season... And you might suddenly come face to face with a Scottish Highland cattle or a wild Konik horse!

De Panne is surrounded by the beach, dunes and beautiful natural landscapes. The 340 hectare Westhoek nature reserve is the oldest Flemish nature reserve (established in 1957). Beach, hiking and parade dunes, dune depressions, gray and white dunes, dune grasslands and limestone swamps bear witness to a lively landscape. The area is also known for its archaeological remains from the Iron Age to the early Middle Ages.

The De Westhoek Dune Reserve is a nature reserve in the Belgian coastal municipality of De Panne, in the De Westhoek region. The area is owned by the Flemish Region and is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forests, which is part of the Ministry of the Environment, Nature and Energy. The reserve is enclosed between the North Sea in the north, the French/Belgian border in the west, the N386 (Duinhoekstraat) in the south and finally the Calmeynbos and the buildings of De Panne in the east. The nature reserve covers the most intact sea dune landscape on the Flemish coast. One can observe the dynamic process of dune formation in the different stages of development. This results in dune landscapes with very different ages, shapes and vegetation. More or less parallel to the coastline, the following zones can be distinguished from north to south: the beach, the front dunes, the northern pan belt, the central drift dune (the Roman plain), the southern pan belt and finally the inner dunes.

The dune reserve is of course not cycleable.
