The observatory at about 2375 meters altitude is a settlement of observatories on the slope of the Roque de los Muchachos. Here are extremely many cloudless nights recorded. It is one of the most important plants of this kind worldwide and was opened in 1985.
On July 24, 2009, the world's largest reflecting telescope was commissioned by the Spanish King Juan Carlos with a diameter of 10.4 m.
The plant is operated by several EU states, including Germany.
