Auerhuhn Display Enclosure Lonau (Harz National Park, HWN Special Stamp 192)

The capercaillie display enclosure of the national park is located in the southern Harz near Lonau. In the beautiful beech forests of the southern Harz Mountains, near the small village of Lonau, lies the capercaillie show enclosure of the national park. It is home to specimens of the grouse species that was formerly native to northern Germany. The enclosure can be reached from the Lonau village community center in the town center via a short footpath through the Lonau meadows.

The Lonau ranger station is located in the Lonau village community center.

Above Lonau, the capercaillie and the capercaillie can be observed in the enclosure. From the ranger station in Lonau it is about 1 kilometer on foot.

The capercaillie enclosure can only be reached on foot. From Herzberg a 3.5km long hiking trail leads up through the forest. It is only a few minutes from Lonau. With a bit of luck, there will be a ranger on site who will be happy to answer all questions about the capercaillie and the capercaillie. The capercaillie enclosure consists of a pavilion, from which one has a view of the individual enclosures. The tour itself is therefore protected from the weather.
