The stone gate was built in 1270 in the Gothic style. In the Middle Ages it was the main entrance to the city. The princes came through this gate in order to quickly get to the town hall and St. Mary's Church on the street that was paved especially for them (Steinstraße). In 1566 it was torn down on the orders of Duke Johann Albrecht I because Rostock refused to take the formal oath of homage. The Rostockers had the successor building built from 1575 to 1577 in the style of the Dutch Renaissance. Severe war damage made extensive restoration necessary again from 1950 to 1954. Today the gate shines above all with its ornate city side as an element of the preserved city wall adjoining to the east, right up to the cow gate.
