The Kuhtor is the smallest of the former four land gates of the Rostock city fortifications to the south. It was created around 1262. The name refers to the agricultural environment of the city. From 1600 it served as a civil prison, later as a residential building. It was destroyed in World War II in 1942 and, after being rebuilt, has served as a literary center since 1985.
