From the Weser bridge in Petershagen, it stretches 24 kilometers to the state border with Lower Saxony near Schlüsselburg and encompasses the area of the floodplains of the Weser.

The importance of the Weseraue due to the year-round function as breeding, resting, moulting and wintering place. Among the waders and waterfowl that can be found here are the common sandpiper, the common pochard and the miniature swan. As an outstanding component of the European bird sanctuary, the Weseraue habitat is, among other things, for the lapwing, the seed goose, the pale-goose and the whooper swan as well as the water-runner.

The Weseraue is an important cross-linking element for the aforementioned nature reserves. The typical alpine habitats such as meadows and pastures, alluvial shrubs and small bodies of water contribute to this. There are also several former gravel excavations in the nature reserve.
