The importance of the Weseraue due to the year-round function as breeding, resting, moulting and wintering place. Among the waders and waterfowl that can be found here are the common sandpiper, the common pochard and the miniature swan. As an outstanding component of the European bird sanctuary, the Weseraue habitat is, among other things, for the lapwing, the seed goose, the pale-goose and the whooper swan as well as the water-runner.
