The church in Genin is mentioned for the first time in 1286. It is the main church of the capital villages Genin, Oberbüssau, Niederbüssau and Vorrade. The manor village Moisling and the manorial villages between Trave and Grinau were added later. These villages and their lands remained in the possession of the cathedral chapter until 1804 and then belonged to the city of Lübeck.

The church is dedicated to St George, the patron saint of knights and keeper from the plague. George, the first of the 14 patron saints, stands like a safe castle within Lübeck's Landwehr. The tower with its numerous wall anchors in the shape of a cross still gives this impression today.
