Between 1584 and 1810, under the pressure of Ostend, the historic polders around Ostend acquired a typical character that distinguishes them from the other coastal polders. In that period, those polders were strongly influenced by Ostend in terms of landscape and the city dominated the area due to its economically more special port function as well as its military function as a fortified city.

At the time, the thirteen polders were grouped into one Craft, the Heerwoutermansambacht, except for the Snaaskerksepolder, which belonged to the Camerlinckxambacht. Historically, the areas are bounded in the south by the Nieuwpoort – Plassendale canal, in the east by the Bredense dike, in the west by the Steense dike and the Schorredijk around the Snaaskerksepolder and in the north by dunes, city and dunes.
