Tips

  • "The 1/2/6/9 mine was only a few meters away from downtown Herne. So there were early restrictions on coal mining. The prescribed displacement of the mountains increased costs and mitigated damage to the mountain only. An own coking plant was not built, but an existing private 1873 taken over. Degradation shifted more to the west, where less private development existed. The coal mines that were built here were built on their own land. The coal-mining plants that existed next to the mine (the A43 did not exist yet) developed into large factories, most recently affiliated with the Hüls Chemical Works. The nitrogen plant belonged for a long time to the largest fertilizer producer of Europe, the Ruhrstickstoff and was sold 1985 to the norwegian Norsk Hydro. The smaller facility in the city center was taken over by the South African company Sasol. Their facilities have eradicated all traces of the colliery, the shafts are therefore not accessible on the premises. Only a few buildings at the former colliery entrance are preserved, but are located within the premises. Here was also the administration of the mining company Hibernia, to which Shamrock belonged.
After the end of the nitrogen plant was built on the grounds of 1990, the industrial park Hibernia, which still has some open spaces. Only the gasometer remained intact and sporadically serves as advertising space for a sports goods retailer located in the park. Use as in the (much larger gasometer in Oberhausen) fails so far to the renovation costs inside.
How nested the plants were initially shows the sinking of shaft 9 as a new production shaft. For this purpose, the boiler factory Berninghaus lying next to the three other shafts was demolished. "
