While returning from a mission over Nuremberg, Germany, the **Halifax JD371 KN-O** bomber of the 77th Squadron RAF was attacked by a German fighter and caught fire. Four crew members managed to parachute out, but one of them did not survive. The pilot, with great courage, steered the damaged aircraft away from the village to avoid disaster and it crashed in a meadow, sacrificing his life and that of the three other men on board.
