The windmill was originally built in 1740 in Grossenstein near Ronneburg. It stood on the edge of the Way of the Cross at the so-called "Kreutzstein", not far from the trade route between Ronneburg and Zeitz. This location also gave the mill its name: Kreutzstein windmill. Milling continued until 1951. In 1982, it was relocated to the German Agricultural Museum at Blankenhain Castle, which saved the mill from falling into disrepair. In 1987 it was restored. The technology of the post mill has been partially preserved.
