Unlike the limestone rock of Salève which dates from the Jurassic (-130 million years), the rocks of Faverges come from the Eocene (-40 million years) and are made up of sandstone with veins of iron oxide .
The latter were exploited in Roman times, which gave the name to these rocks: Faverges comes from the Latin "fabrica" which designates a metal working workshop.
