Top cycling routes to Arnsberg Old Town

Tips

  • Wonderful old town: Old market with bell tower
forms old Arnsberg's "parlor" together with the old town hall (1710), bell tower and Maximilian fountain (1779).
The fountain column was given to his Westphalian residence by Elector Maximilian Friedrich (1784-1791). The city Madonna (Swabian, around 1500) in the front of the town hall has miraculously survived a number of city fires unscathed. On the north side of the town hall we find the Electorate of Cologne coat of arms, a symbol of Cologne rule in Arnsberg (1369-1802).
The bell tower is a landmark of the city with its baroque dome and is visible from afar. The St. George's Town Chapel next door is a Gothic hall church from the 14th century.

  • If you cycle the entire Ruhr Valley Cycle Route, I recommend at least three detours:
To Arnsberg, Wetter, Hattingen, but of course there are other nice places too.
In Arnsberg, the area around the bell tower is particularly worth seeing.

  • This part of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path is almost car-free, but you are led along structurally separate cycle paths right next to the busy federal highway for a long time.
You can cycle there safely, but the smell and noise just make it unpleasant to have to cycle so close to a federal highway...
In the villages, the (narrow) sidewalk is often open to pedestrians. This is certainly a big challenge for seniors with walkers and parents with small children, when they have to constantly watch out for the much faster cyclists.
And as is often the case on cycle paths in Germany, curbs are often not lowered, roots that undulate the road surface and large potholes are common...
