A church probably existed since 1124 at the latest. The monastery church was built from 1173, initially as a Romanesque basilica. After a fire in 1210, today's parish church was rebuilt and expanded in the Gothic style.

Worth seeing in the St. Laurentius Church: The high altar was originally a tomb for the Landdrosten Caspar von Fürstenberg. The focus of the tomb made of slate and alabaster is the carrying of the cross, burial and resurrection of Christ. The stained glass in the central choir window (approx. 1254) is also of particular importance in the hall church with Renaissance and Baroque furnishings, as it is one of the oldest stained glass windows in Westphalia. The colored wooden relief in the Marian altar shows the adoration of the Three Wise Men and is a gift from the Cologne cathedral chapter as thanks for the fact that the relics of the Three Wise Men were hidden here during the Napoleonic turmoil from 1794 to 1803. A Romanesque cross hangs above the baptismal font. This work of art was found almost by accident in the attic of a former customs post (Tollpöstchen) and is the oldest work of art in the church (12th century).
