    story
The Art Museum in Ilulissat opened in 1995. This made it the first museum in the country to specialize only in art. It was not until 2005 that the second art museum in Greenland opened in the capital Nuuk. Since 2007, artists have met weekly in the museum to paint.

    building
The art museum is located in the former home of the colonial administrator. The building was designed by Helge Bojsen-Møller in 1923. The museum also has a small apartment in which artists, writers or photographers can temporarily live. The building is protected. For detailed descriptions of the history and architecture of the building, see the list of architectural monuments in Ilulissat.

    exhibition
The Ilulissat Art Museum mainly exhibits paintings by the artist Emanuel A. Petersen (1894–1948). The Dane painted specifically North Greenlandic motifs. These make up about half of the 100 works of art. There are also other works by artists from all over the world.

Here you can still marvel at genuine craftsmanship. Figures of the Inuit are carved from bones or teeth.
