The project was commissioned by Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoy, son and successor of Umberto I, to the architect Giuseppe Sacconi (1854-1905), already author of the project for the Vittoriano di Roma, or Altare della Patria.
The ceremony of laying the foundation stone was held on July 29, 1901, the first anniversary of the regicide. The works were still not very advanced when Sacconi died and were then continued by his pupil Guido Cirilli, who introduced various changes to the original project.
The chapel was inaugurated on the tenth anniversary of the regicide, on July 29, 1910.

The Expiatory Chapel, a memorial made to commemorate the regicide of Umberto I, killed in Monza on 29 July 1900. The Chapel stands on the exact spot where the anarchist Gaetano Bresci shot the King, killing him at the end of a sporting event.
If you have time, you can visit the inside of the chapel (beautiful).
