About A Cycling Journey

A Cycling Journey (ACJ) is a project born out of love for cycling and the outdoors. It is the story of an average but determined cyclist on a journey of discovery and exploration:
What can cycling teach us about our limits?
Does it ever get easier or do you just get faster?
How fast can you really get and how far can you really go?
How can cycling help us keeping our mental health and can you balance serious training with a 9-5 job?
What is this "Gravel" thing everyone talks about?
Is it or is it not all about the bike? And how many bikes do you need?
How difficult is it to maintain your own bikes?
Can you start Mountain Biking in your late 40s?
And how many other questions about cycling can we answer?

This has to be my most ambitious planned tour to date, but while I sit here on the sofa nursing my dislocated collarbone dreaming of cycling in the Alps and on familiar roads is all I can do... plus dreaming is free, right?

The inspiration for this tour is twofold.

On one hand there's the fact that it

      I just ❤️ Friuli.

It's the region where I was born and where I left my heart when I decided to explore the world.

With its mountains, hills, valleys and plains criss-crossed by plentiful lakes, rivers and water streams, Friuli has something to offer to any cyclist!

Sellaronda is a route that takes in 4 alpine passes (Pordoi, Campolongo, Gardena, Sella) in the Italian Dolomites forming a loop that can be ridden in either direction (although, anticlockwise is suggested) and starting from any of the 4 valleys interconnecting them.

The route can be ridden at any time

It has now been three days since Good Friday’s Criterium Race at Castle Combe, and it’s about time that I look at what happened “from the outside” and put it down in writing to make some sense of it… Hint: it wasn’t really a ‘Good Friday’ for me 🙄

Let’s roll back to Friday morning…

I had most of my gear

I have to admit that I had higher hopes for this race, but my good legs did not show up tonight and I had to make do with their more fatigued distant cousins! 😓

But let’s start from the beginning.

I managed to leave home after work almost on time and the trip to the racing circuit went without a hitch

Just testing out the bike before tomorrow's criterium race and throwing a couple of sprints in to prime the legs and remind myself what sprinting feels like 😅

The puncture fairy visited too 🙄

I was a bit miffed that it was the brand new rear tyre that had a flat, as opposed to the front one with 3,500

I had to give this morning's club ride/chaingang a miss, but was determined to ride outdoors after missing yesterday's ‘après le travail’ one too and being stuck on the turbo trainer for most of the week…

I had other cycling-related stuff I needed to take care of earlier in the day (something to do with

Lobster gloves are the best thing since sliced bread! Albeit a little dexterity-impairing, they keep your hands toasty in below-zero temperatures.

I left my lobster gloves at home, despite the forecast for very cold temperatures, and then spent the first 2 hours of the ride regretting it 😓

Doffed my “Castelli Aero Race” club jersey after last week’s criterium and donned my Randonneur’s imaginary hat, on what seemed to be the perfect Spring day and a gorgeous one for cycling, I rode my 4th monthly 200+ Km Audax in my quest to achieve the Randonneur Round the Year award.

After (too?) much Zwifting, taking in the last of the afternoon's sun for a quick spin and to check that everything is in good order for tomorrow's London-Oxford-London Audax.

Sporting my new Reading CC jersey too, must be the first time I ride in shorts in March in years 😳
