About A Cycling Journey

A Cycling Journey (ACJ) is a project born out of love for cycling and the outdoors. It is the story of an average but determined cyclist on a journey of discovery and exploration:
What can cycling teach us about our limits?
Does it ever get easier or do you just get faster?
How fast can you really get and how far can you really go?
How can cycling help us keeping our mental health and can you balance serious training with a 9-5 job?
What is this "Gravel" thing everyone talks about?
Is it or is it not all about the bike? And how many bikes do you need?
How difficult is it to maintain your own bikes?
Can you start Mountain Biking in your late 40s?
And how many other questions about cycling can we answer?

As I set out for this 200 km ride, my first DIY Audax ever, many thoughts went through my head but I really wasn't remotely expecting it to end the way it did... 🙄

But let's get back to the beginning, shall we?

Earlier in the month I had made the sensible decision to give a planned Audax event a miss

    1. What a day!

High highs and low lows on a day spent riding bikes from dawn to dusk.

But let's get back to the beginning...

After spending the previous afternoon getting my bike ready and after way too little sleep, around 5.20am I woke up fighting my alarm and the desire to just stay in bed 😴

      What if I gave

    1. Time to get back to the fam...

The Queen Elizabeth line between Reading and Paddington today was a relative success: I found it quite convenient for off-peak bike transportation, despite the many lifts you have to take on either side to get your bicycle to/from the platforms.

      Shame the services to/from

    1. What a lovely day!

In typical London fashion, the skies stayed gray all day and we never caught a glimpse of the sun ☁️🌧☁️, but we did not get soaked and had a nice social ride despite the traffic forcing us back to single file at times 🚴🚴‍♂️

    1. It took us some planning, then some replanning, and then some more planning, but today I finally managed to get to Abingdon and ride with my friend Andy 🎉

We met up close to the main Abingdon square and started the ride the right way: with a stop to a café for coffee and a pastry.

As we then set off the

    1. I cannot believe how quickly time flies! 😱

It feels like yesterday that I was planning my Summer rides in the Alps, and then again it feels like yesterday that I was riding through the Brianza countryside one last time... blink and a month and a half has gone by already! 😳

      In any case... after weeks

    1. The time has come for a final goodbye to the Italian seaside for 2022 🏖

This time, however, rather than spending the day at the beach we decided to hike 'Sentiero Rilke' between Sistiana (one of my wife's favourite destinations) and Duino (turismofvg.it/en/68293/rilke-trail) with our over-excitable and
