    Gnalp-Steg tunnel
In 1867, when the road was being built from Vaduz via Meierhof and Triesenberg to Malbun, the first 48 m long road tunnel between Gnalp and Steg was built. This at an altitude of 1430 m above sea level. The tunnel crossing the Kulm remained the only passable connection to the Samina valley until the middle of the 20th century. The steep road layout as well as the emergence of tourism and car traffic / motorization called for a more attractive connection. In 1934 Wilhelm Beck suggested the construction of the Gnalp – Steg tunnel, among other things to combat unemployment. Decided in 1939, its realization was delayed due to lack of money. In 1945, the state parliament approved a loan of CHF 1.2 million for the construction of the new, approximately 130 m lower and 740 m long tunnel. After construction began in February 1946, the breakthrough took place on September 4, 1946 and the inauguration on December 4, 1947. In 1989–94 the tunnel was renovated for 6.8 million Swiss francs and a parallel service gallery was built. A referendum against this project failed in a referendum in 1988 (3943 yes / 3211 no). Plans by the referendum committee to build a new, longer tunnel were thus rejected.
