The Erlangen lock is an economy lock with a lock chamber and three economy basins, which are arranged in a staircase to the west of the chamber. The lock chamber is 190m long and 12m wide. The U-shaped frame of the chamber was built in solid construction and consists of individual blocks separated by joints. Water entered through these joints after only a short period of operation of the lock and severely damaged the structure. For this reason, the new lock is planned to be largely seamless.

The Erlangen lock was put into operation in 1970. It has a lifting height of around 18m; The usable length and width correspond to the standard values of 190 m and 12 m that apply to the Main-Danube Canal.
